This blog introduces the hardware setup of Sinamics S120 drive. Sinamics is family of drives from Siemens designed for machine and plant engineering applications. Depending on application, different versions of Sinamics are available. Discussion of this blog is based on Sinamics S120.

Sinamics S120 is best suited for industrial applications due to its modular drive system. The following components are available with the Sinamics S120 drive.

  1. Control Unit CU 310–2PN
  2. Power Module PM 240–2
  3. Synchronous Motor of 1FK7 Family
  4. Motion Connect Drive-Cliq Cable
  5. Motion Connect Power Cable
  6. Memory Card

Control Unit

The Control Units are designed for operation connected directly to a Power Module. The Control Unit is responsible for all closed–loop/open–loop and communication functions with the drive system components. The model of Control Unit with its interfaces and features is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1. Overview of Control Unit.

The Control Unit can be powered through X124 interface with a input supply of 24 VDC (max. 28.8 VDC).

The Control Unit has got Profinet interface X150 with two ports (P1, P2) for communication with Computer and/or PLC.

The Control Unit consist of Drive-Cliq interface which is an ethernet based protocol used to transfer the motor metadata (motor model, encoder model) to the Control Unit.

The memory card slot is provided on the front cover of the Control Unit. The memory card has the firmware and default parameters for the operation of the Control Unit. Insert the memory card into the CU310–2 PN so that the arrow on the card’s label (on the left, next to the word Siemens) points to the arrow on the device as shown in Figure 2.

Power Module

Power Modules are designed for line-side diode rectifier, DC-link electrolytic capacitors with pre-charging circuit, output inverter, braking chopper for (external) braking resistor, 24 VDC / 1 A power supply, fan to cool the power semiconductors. The model of Power Module is shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3. Overview of Power Module

The input AC supply (230 V) can be connected to the Power Module through the withdrawable line connector as shown in Table 1.

Table 1. Input AC supply

The motor is connected to the Power Module using Motion-Connect Power Cable through protective conductor connection as shown in Table 2.

Table 2. Motor connections

Synchronous Motor

The synchronous motor consist of one Drive-Cliq interface (1) for connecting to the Control Unit and one Power Cable interface (2) for connecting to the Power Module as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4. Synchronous motor.

System Overview

The hardware wiring of the S120 drive system is shown in Figure 5.
